The National Geographic Photo Ark is a 25 year project that aims to photograph every species in captivity in order to raise awareness of the biodiversity crisis and inspire people to protect and conserve endangered species. Sartore began the project in 2006 and has since travelled to zoos and aquariums around the world, taking portraits of (to date) just over 14,000 creatures. Now, some of the species he has photographed are already extinct, highlighting the importance of the project to preserve a record of our planet’s biodiversity. Isolating the creatures on black or white backgrounds enables us to see their individual beauty and detail that we might not ordinarily see.
Sartore’s photographs have been published in numerous magazines and books, and have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. He has also given numerous presentations and talks on the importance of conservation and the role that photography can play in conservation efforts. Sartore has worked on many other photography projects, including stories on biodiversity hotspots, climate change, and cultural heritage. He is also the author of several books, including “Photo Ark: A World Worth Saving” and “Rare: Portraits of America’s Endangered Species.”
The Photo Ark can help raise awareness of biodiversity in several ways:
Highlighting the importance of biodiversity: By showcasing the incredible diversity of species through vivid and compelling photographs, the Photo Ark project can help people appreciate the importance of biodiversity and the critical role that each species plays in maintaining the balance of the natural world.
Inspiring action: The project can inspire people to take action to protect endangered species and their habitats. Seeing the beauty and diversity of these animals can motivate people to get involved in conservation efforts, whether that means supporting conservation organisations or making changes in their own lives to reduce their impact on the environment.
Engaging the public: The project can engage the public and encourage them to learn more about the species featured in the photographs. By providing information about each species and their conservation status, the Photo Ark project can help people understand the threats facing these animals and what can be done to protect them.
