Protecting African Lions

A bracelet designed for lions: every one sold helped protect lionesses from poachers, and GTT sponsored a tracker to watch over one of them.

GTT collaborated with PAL — Protecting African Lions — to help do exactly what the name says. Together we created something rather special: a green bracelet featuring a button specially designed by PAL founder and artist Conor McCreedy, in collaboration with artisan Lianne Landman. Each bracelet carries one of four personal quotes written by GTT members, so every bracelet carries a young person’s voice for the lions.

The funds raised helped protect female lions from poachers, ensuring they are able to breed freely — and GTT sponsored a tracker for a female lion, allowing her movements to be followed and her safety watched over.

The work goes far beyond individual lions. It helped strengthen community outreach projects working with local schools in areas where African lions live, so that local people understand and respect the value of the lion. That respect adds value to the whole landscape and the other wild species living there, building healthier ecosystems and helping preserve biodiversity. In turn, this raises the status of the African lion and pushes towards the banning of African lion exports and a change in the species’ CITES protection.
